To clear your mind from constant thoughts, even just briefly, can be powerful in improving mental health and increasing positive emotions. Anything that takes your mind to that activity, and only that activity, is a form of meditation. You could play an instrument, craft, sing or surf. However there are many ways you can meditate, and you may be doing it without realising. Many people think meditation requires you to sit still and quieten your thoughts, focusing on your breathing. Put walking and mindfulness together, and you get a powerhouse of benefits. Mindfulness is getting increased attention in scientific research for its therapeutic benefits including improvements in depression, anxiety, stress and quality of life. Walking has become not only an activity for the body, but also for the mind.
